This presentation will introduce key features of the neurodiversity movement, explain why it is essential we make this shift, and provide ideas for how to move your own practice to be more neurodiversity-affirming. We will discuss important shifts in the language we use when discussing our neurodivergent kids, and how we can build a culture of understanding to better support all students. While participants will walk away with some concrete ideas for how to shift their practice, the larger goal is that they move forward with a transformative vision of acceptance and advocacy for autistic, other-neurodivergent, and other-disabled people.
Participants will be able to:
  • Explain what the Neurodiversity Paradigm is and how it helps guide thinking for neurodiversity-affirming practitioners.
  • Describe shifts in language practitioners can use to be more neurodiversity-affirming.
  • Explain the Double Empathy Problem and its importance to the neurodiversity movement.
  • Describe what Autistic Masking is and its impact on individuals.
  • Describe three key ways practitioners can shift their work to be more neurodiversity-affirming.

Eligible for free 1 hour NASP Approved CEU with completion of evaluation form.
