Beyond the Deficit Model: Supporting Neurodivergent Individuals with Affirming Practices
A Professional Development Workshop

for the Maine Association of School Psychologists

Monday, May 19, 12:00 - 3:00 PM

with Michelle Long, MS, OTR/L

Presentation Overview:
As school psychologists, you play a critical role in shaping how neurodivergent students experience education and THEMSELVES—through assessments, reports, and interactions with families. But are your current practices truly neurodiversity-affirming and supportive? This workshop moves beyond basic neurodiversity awareness to real, actionable changes in our practice.

Through discussion, case studies, and hands-on activities, participants will explore how to:

  • Reduce harm during the testing and diagnosis process
  • Shift from a deficit-based to a strengths-based assessment mode
  • Write reports that empower rather than pathologize
  • Implement meaningful, lasting changes to better support neurodivergent students and families

This session is designed to be engaging, reflective, and solution-focused—helping you leave with practical strategies you can apply immediately in your role.

Pricing:

Member/Nonmember $75.00

Student/Retirees $50.00

Eligible for 3 NASP Approved CEUs upon completion of the program and the evaluation form.
