Culturally Responsive Assessment of Multilingual Learners:

A Case Study Approach

Brief Description:

This professional development case discussion is designed to support school psychologists in developing effective strategies for assessing and supporting multilingual learners in Maine’s increasingly diverse educational settings. Through a collaborative and solution-focused approach, participants will engage in discussions of real-life case studies, exploring the complexities of language acquisition, cultural identity, and academic achievement. The series aims to foster a deeper understanding of the unique needs and strengths of multilingual learners, promoting culturally responsive practices that enhance their academic success and social-emotional well-being.

These case studies aim to provide a comprehensive assessment of students’ cognitive and linguistic abilities, with a focus on identifying strengths and challenges in language processing, literacy, and academic skills. Using tools such as the Cultural Language Interpretive Matrix (C-LIM) and the Cultural Language Interpretive Matrix Achievement Test Extension (C-LIM+ATE), this assessment will provide one option in providing a detailed understanding of a student's language development, literacy skills, and cognitive abilities.

If you have a case that you would like to discuss or questions you would like addressed, please feel free to email abuckley@sanford.org with de-identified information case information, or questions. Priority will be given to those cases where information is sent ahead of time.
